Layered design across the daypart
A successful hospitality scheme runs four distinct scenes across the day: morning (bright, cool-warm, task-led for breakfast service); afternoon (medium-bright, neutral, ambient-led); early evening (warmer, dimmer, transition); and evening service (warmest, dimmest, accent-led). The same fixture set delivers all four through dimming and per-circuit scene control — the hardware is constant, the photometric output is not.
Within each scene, the room runs three layers: ambient (general fill), task (over the dining surface, the bar, the reception desk), and accent (artwork, columns, planters, signature features). The ratio between the layers shifts with the scene — task dominates at lunch, accent dominates in the evening.
Colour rendering and CCT
Hospitality is the application where colour rendering matters most. Guests notice when food looks dull, skin tones look greenish, or fabrics look washed-out. Ra ≥ 90 with R9 (deep red) ≥ 50 is the defensible minimum for restaurant accent lighting; the same applies to hotel dressing-table mirrors and bathroom vanities, where accurate skin rendering is non-negotiable.
Colour temperature for evening hospitality typically lands between 2400K and 2700K — warmer than residential, warmer than retail, warm enough to feel intimate without dropping into the orange territory that flatters food poorly. Tunable-white fixtures on the ambient layer let the room shift across the daypart without re-lamping.
Glare, contrast, and dwell
Direct glare from a downlight into a seated guest's eye-line is the single most common hospitality lighting fault. Recessed fixtures with deep regression, honeycomb baffles, or fully indirect coves are the standard fixes. The metric is UGR (Unified Glare Rating) per EN 12464-1; UGR ≤ 19 is the office target, but UGR ≤ 16 is the more defensible target for fine-dining and luxury hospitality.
Contrast between the ambient layer and the accent layer is what makes a room feel composed. A 3:1 to 5:1 ratio between the brightest accent and the ambient surround sits in the comfortable range; flatter than 3:1 reads bland, sharper than 5:1 reads theatrical.

EN 12464-1 (Indoor Workplaces) covers the back-of-house and task areas. CIBSE LG02 (Hospitality) is the principal applied reference for front-of-house design. UGR per CIE 117 governs glare. - Why does hospitality lighting use warmer colour temperatures than other commercial environments?
- Warm light (2400–2700K) reads as intimate and relaxed; cooler light (3500K+) reads as alert and clinical. Hospitality is selling a particular emotional register, and colour temperature is one of the most direct levers for setting that register.
- What is the difference between Ra and R9 in colour rendering?
- Ra (the General Colour Rendering Index, sometimes called CRI) is an average across eight pastel reference colours. R9 specifically measures saturated red rendering — the colour of food, wine, lipstick, and skin tones. A fixture can have a high Ra but a low R9 and still render reds poorly. For hospitality, both metrics matter.
- How do scene presets work day-to-day?
- A scene preset is a stored set of dimming levels and colour temperatures across all the circuits in a room. Staff select scenes from a wall panel or an app — 'morning', 'lunch', 'evening' — and the system ramps every circuit to its preset over a few seconds. The hardware doesn't change between scenes; the photometric output does.
